Ferrule

Vectra liquid crystal polymer is also used in fibre optics – particularly for connectors. The crucial factors here are Vectra’s good mechanical properties, even in thin wall sections, and the extreme precision with which ferrules can be made. Ferrules can be injection moulded to incorporate holes to carry the 125 μm thick glass fibres to tolerances of 1-2 μm. Design changes integrating the end plate and the adjacent insulating plate may reduce cost and weight as much as 90% compared to current fuel cell prototypes employing metal.A PEM fuel cell assembly contains a stack of about 200 series-connected cells. The stack is held together through bolting from the end plates to hold the bipolar plates in the stack together and compress the gaskets between them.
